                     GUERNICA EDITIONS

PictureGuernica is named after Picasso’s famous 1937 painting.
Guernica, established in 1978, was the first press in Canada to feature a multicultural blend of Canadian and foreign authors. It was one of the first presses to create a broad-based translation system of French Quebec writers into English and one of the first English presses in Canada to establish contacts with European writers.

Most importantly, Guernica was the house where fringe or marginal voices, voices that would not normally get heard, were welcomed and supported.

Under that mantle, Guernica has published books in every genre: poetry, short story collections, novels and novellas, literary essays, cultural and political treatises, interviews, biographies, memoirs and plays.

Guernica's authors -- more than 500 -- have been the recipients of numerous awards, including the prestigious Governor General's Literary Award, the Trillium Book Award, U.S. National Book Awards and Bressani Literary Prizes.

We are proud of our three most recent Governor General's award nominations:
Austin Clarke’s poetry collection Where The Sun Shines Best, Luise von Flotow’s French-English translation of France Theoret’s The Stalinist’s Wife, and Marianne Micros' Eye.
